Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Nepho, the private 12-step recovery app.
Nepho is a private, easy-to-use tool to help newcomers work through the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's designed to guide you, step by step, through reflections, inventories, journaling, and conversations with your sponsor. The goal is progress, not perfection.
My name is Jeff and I'm an alcoholic. I am currently in AA and working the Steps with a great sponsor. I built Nepho as a way to deepen my personal recovery knowledge and to carry the message to other alcoholics, in the spirit of Step 12. Nepho is a labor of love, not profit.
The word 'Nepho' (νήφω) is a Greek term that means 'to be sober,' 'clear-minded,' or 'watchful.' It's used in ancient texts, including the Bible, to describe a state of awareness and self-control. I chose this name to reflect the spirit of recovery without directly naming AA.
Another reason is anonymity: some people may not want an app labeled 'AA' on their home screen. 'Nepho' is subtle, respectful, and keeps your recovery private, just like the program.
No. Nepho is not affiliated with or endorsed by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services (AAWS). It was built independently, by someone in recovery, to support others on their journey. The content is inspired by AA literature, experience, and principles.
Nepho is most useful when used alongside a sponsor, since AA is a program of fellowship and guidance. However, if you don't have a sponsor yet, Nepho may help you get familiar with the steps and prepare for that important relationship.
Nepho is completely anonymous. All data is stored only on your device. Nothing is sent to a server or stored in the cloud. Your journaling, inventories, and reflections remain private, just like in a real-life Step 5, it's your choice who you share them with.
Nope. No account. No username. No tracking. No email address. Nepho respects AA's tradition of anonymity and your right to privacy.
Start with Step 1. Each step includes a short explanation, some suggested readings, a few daily practices, and journal prompts or inventories. There's no wrong way to begin, just start where you are and keep going.
Yes. It's completely free and contains no ads or paid features. It's supported by the spirit of service, not profit.
Absolutely. While AA uses spiritual language, the program is not religious. Nepho reflects that inclusive tone and encourages you to find a Higher Power of your own understanding.
Yes! If you know someone struggling with alcohol, or someone just starting the 12 Steps, feel free to share it. One alcoholic helping another is the foundation of our recovery.
